COVID-19 Response

For arts and cultural organizations, or any businesses that depend on people gathering socially, the effects of COVID-19 are immediate and financially devastating. We have a $150,000 gap in funding due to loss of income in 2020. While we are doing our best to reduce expenses we depend on the generosity of our community to continue our work. Please consider a gift to help us return strong in 2021.

Your Tickets. Our Future.

Traditionally in May, theatre artists from all over the country converge on the Black Hills Playhouse in Custer State Park to create the magic of live theatre. Each year we joyfully look forward to greeting old friends, enjoying shows together, and reveling in the beauty of this historic space.

Sadly, in 2020, due to the potential health risks associated with COVID-19, our gem of a stage will be dark, and for the first time in 75 years, we will miss the opportunity to gather. Even though it is difficult, we are resolved to do our part to keep people safe until this crisis passes. We will miss everyone terribly!

We regret that will we not be able to roll over tickets purchased to the 2021 Season and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our customers. The decision was made so we can more accurately assess our economic situation and have sufficient season investment dollars available when we need them in the spring of 2021. The Annual Holiday Sale for the 2021 Season will open on November 1, 2020.

Options regarding your season investment

  • Make a fully tax-deductible donation of the value of your passes or tickets to the Black Hills Playhouse. Please see information on special 2020 tax deduction opportunities through the CARES Act.

  • Donate a portion of the pass or ticket value to the Black Hills Playhouse. Every dollar makes a difference for us at this difficult time.

  • Request a full refund of your passes or tickets for the 2020 Season. Refunds will be made within 30 days of requests received.

The Playhouse is currently facing staggering financial and creative challenges as a result of the simultaneous loss of statewide educational contracts, lost ticket revenue, and contributed income. Even though we cannot produce a season until 2021, the company has ongoing expenses and obligations through the end of the year. Simply put, we are asking those in our community who can to help us hang on and stay strong. Currently, the best way you can help is through a donation of the value of your tickets or passes or an additional donation. We are looking to fill a $150,000 gap due to lost revenues in 2020.

Whichever choice you make regarding your 2020 ticket purchase, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a supporter of the Playhouse. Without our loyal fans, dedicated volunteers, donors, sponsors, advertisers, and talented artists, we would not be able to produce spectacular theatre in Custer State Park or take theatre programs to kids statewide. With your help we can all look forward to a big celebration in 2021 when we re-open!

Please fill out THIS FORM to let us know which option you prefer. We will be working diligently to respond to requests in the order that they are received.

We look forward to seeing you online throughout the year and at the theatre in person next season. Please stay safe and take care.

With gratitude until we meet again,

Your Friends at the Black Hills Playhouse
