At the Black Hills Playhouse, we believe theatre is more than a performance—it's a powerful, shared human experience that should be open to everyone. That belief comes to life each summer at our BHP Jr. Camps, where young people discover their voices, build confidence, and form lasting friendships through the magic of theatre. Year after year, we’re inspired as students grow in creativity and character, reminding us just how transformative the arts can be.
Our BHP Jr. Camps offer two unique experiences: one for students entering grades 5–8 and another for those in grades 8–12. Both provide a supportive and inclusive space where campers can explore the world of performing arts, connect with peers, and create memories that last long after the final curtain call. Many of our campers return year after year and express the excitement they feel about coming together with their friends and bringing a play to life.
In 2025, we are so proud to share that over 100 campers joined us at Placerville Camp this July! It was truly an unforgettable summer, watching our campers grow, explore their creative expression, and bring Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. to the stage.
Hearing what the camp experience is like from our very own campers makes all the hard work and long nights more than worth it.

These words from past campers are the cherry on top for us!
“The thing that I love most about theater is that it allows you to create an imaginary space where you ultimately become someone, or in some cases something, else.” - Max J.
“One of my favorite things about summer is going to BHP Jr. and getting to meet new people and grow as a performer and person.” - Anna B.
“I am most excited for this year's camp because I will be reunited with my second home and family.” - Layton R.
As the curtain closes on another unforgettable summer, one thing is clear: access to the arts matters. Young people participating in enriching activities in a safe place where they feel they belong is essential to their development. At a time when federal funding for arts education is disappearing, programs like BHP Jr. are more vital than ever.
Camps, touring programs, and programs for people with disabilities provide a space for individuals to express themselves and discover the joy of creating something together. Your continued support helps us keep camp accessible, inclusive, and thriving during a period when costs are increasing. If we want to ensure these transformative experiences continue for generations to come, now is the time to make your voice heard about the importance of valuable arts funding, which makes activities accessible to people regardless of their income.
Ways to help:
Stay informed and engaged with decisions that impact the arts.
Call your congressman and senators, and let your voice be heard about the importance of accessible arts programs for youth.
Donate today to the Black Hills Playhouse HERE and help us keep the magic of theatre alive for every camper, every summer.
Together, we can make sure the show goes on. We can’t thank you enough for your continued support. Learn more about our family of programs here.
