GUARDIANS OF THE BHP
protect, uplift, and support statewide programs of the Black Hills Playhouse. Year in and year out, they are there for us.

Dear Friends of the Black Hills Playhouse,

The Black Hills Playhouse continues to entertain and inspire audiences as we enter our 77th Season, A Different Lens, Immerse Yourself In New Perspectives at the Playhouse.

Summer 2023 includes The Lifespan Of A Fact and Silent Sky, thought-provoking and luminous works exploring issues that confront us in our daily lives through the lens of theatre.  The Drowsy Chaperone brings to life one man’s interpretation of a Broadway cast recording that he obsesses over, and 9 to 5, the Musical chronicles three brave women who revolutionize their corporate structure during a time when it just didn’t happen…highlighting issues which still resonate today!  Let’s face it, this is one of the most diverse and entertaining seasons we’ve offered in our history!

BHP Education programs like Dakota Players reach thousands of kids and their families statewide, expanding minds through cultural learning, teaching teamwork and healthy expression, and reaching some of the smallest communities in our state as well as urban centers. In 2023 look for two BHP Jr. Performing Arts Camps at Placerville for youth in 5th-12th grades, and weekly classes in Sioux Falls which promote healthy living and arts learning for adults and children with disabilities through BHP Expanding Stage opportunities.

We track national trends and statistics and, post-pandemic (are we there yet?), some of them are alarming:

  • 36.5% fewer jobs exist in the performing arts nationally as many venues have closed permanently.

  • Many creative professionals were forced to other job sectors and many haven’t returned, which has created hiring challenges.

        (over, please)

  • Even some of the most popular Broadway shows are shuttering at an alarming level this coming January, due to a decrease in box office receipts.

  • It is estimated that it will take another 3 to 5 years for pre-pandemic numbers to be fully restored.

We are so grateful for the support of our donors who have been essential to our stability.

As we continue to expand on the legacy of our founder, Dr. Warren M. (Doc) Lee to provide high-quality performing arts programs and employ artists in our state, we need your help NOW MORE THAN EVER!

I’m hoping you’ll join our Guardians of the BHP and make a tax-deductible donation TODAY!  Whether you choose to make a one-time donation or sign up for a recurring donation, your contribution will be celebrated!

Best regards,

Jeff Kingsbury

Director of Development

PS:  Our popular Leadership Circle is a great way to help us out.  If you would like to join this special group of donors, make a one-time donation of at least $1500 or sign up for a monthly minimum donation of $125.  Leadership Circle members get first notification of our season, as well as invites to an annual dessert reception or zoom updates.  Or, give me a call at 605-255-4141 to discuss your level of giving.
