Theatre has long been a space for storytelling, creativity, and self-expression. Through innovative programming at the Black Hills Playhouse (BHP), the stage is more than just a place for performance—it’s a platform for inclusivity, empowerment, and extraordinary artistic experiences. Through Expanding Stage, BHP is breaking barriers to ensure theatre is accessible to all, creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to shine.
A Program Rooted in Inclusion
Since 2013, the BHP has collaborated with LifeScape Center for the Arts to develop theatre programs that embrace performers of all abilities. Expanding Stage is designed to provide a space where children and adults with disabilities can come together to learn, create, and perform. By prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity, this collaboration fosters an environment where everyone has a chance to take center stage.
Adaptability Makes for Success
Each ensemble is unique. We see people as individuals and tailor the programs to meet their individual needs. A cast may be made up of people who are developmentally delayed. It may be people who are physically challenged or need to communicate in a different way. Our theatre artists get to know the cast members, employ innovative technology to provide individual support and have developed teaching techniques to help the artist be successful on stage.
More Than Just Performance

Expanding Stage rehearsals are filled with energy, encouragement, creative exploration, and empowerment. Guided by experienced teaching artists, participants develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and confidence. These sessions are not just about learning theatre techniques—they’re about personal growth and self-expression. Each week, teaching artists of BHP bring joy and excitement to DakotAbilities, working with adults with disabilities and their stage partners in interactive sessions that promote movement, laughter, and creativity.
The impact of these sessions goes beyond the stage. Participants gain confidence, improve their social skills, and experience the joy of artistic collaboration. Theatre becomes a vehicle for self-discovery and connection, reinforcing the idea that creativity knows no limitations.
A Celebration of Talent and Community
One of Expanding Stage's highlights is the incredible performances, held three times a year, in partnership with DakotAbilities. These special moments on the stage bring together families, friends, and community members to celebrate each group’s incredible work. The performances showcase theatrical talent and the powerful sense of camaraderie and inclusion that defines this program. Each show is a testament to the creativity, resilience, and dedication of its cast members and the adaptability of the Black Hills Playhouse artists who tailor the program in ways to make each participant successful.
Transforming Lives Through Theatre
The Black Hills Playhouse believes that theatre has the power to change lives. Through this program, participants experience life-changing moments both on and off the stage. Expanding Stage nurtures confidence, provides a sense of belonging, and fosters meaningful relationships between individuals of all abilities.
By expanding the stage—both figuratively and literally—BHP ensures that theatre remains a place for everyone. Expanding Stage is not just about making theatre accessible; it’s about redefining what theatre can be and who can participate. It reminds us that when barriers are removed, the possibilities are endless.
